Since I’m very slow when it comes to finishing games I decided to also start making these first impressions posts! My fiancé got me A Hat in Time as a late birthday present so I’ve been playing it whenever I’ve had the time. So far I’m at 22% completion.
A Hat in Time is a cute little 3D platformer game about a girl who travels around in a spaceship until one day she loses all the time pieces that she uses to fuel her ship, so she has to start searching for them on a nearby planet. The girl is pretty much only known as Hat Kid because she wears a lot of different hats that give her different powers like making bombs or running really fast. So far I’ve got four different hats but I assume there’s going to be more.
The writing in the game is pretty silly, and even though it feels a bit childish for me at times I’ve had a few laughs too. A Hat in Time actually reminds me a lot of the games I used to play as a kid, like Spyro or Crash Bandicoot, which is part of its charm.
Before I started playing I was expecting the game to be a nice chill game to play when I’m too tired for more complicated stuff but honestly, this game is surprisingly hard! Some of the levels are really simple and probably more designed for collecting stuff like money and yarn balls but then there are some that are really challenging. I don’t know if I’m just terrible at platformers but for example a level where you have to lead an orchestra while avoiding bumping into them and avoiding whatever else crazy stuff is happening around you got pretty intense. I ended up giving up on it last night because I just kept dying! Guess I’ll have to try again some other time.
Based on what I’ve played so far I would definitely recommend this game because like I already said it’s cute and surprisingly challenging and probably a tiny nostalgia trip if you grew up with similar games.
Here, have some gameplay too if you’re curious:
